If your computer works with Windows operating system, you can use the keyboard shortcut Windows and (Keep the Windows key down and press the semicolon key) to make the emojis virtual keyboard appear.
If you use one Apple Mac with one Mac OS, you can use the keyboard shortcut ^ Control + ⌘ Command + Space bar to open the virtual keyboard that will allow you to find a virtual keyboard of emoji and special characters.
When using an App that allows you to edit text, use the menu at the top of the screen: Edit > Emoji and symbols to find the emoji editor and special characters.
The Internet has significantly changed our way of communicating. Given that body language and verbal tone are not translated into our text messages or emails, we have developed other methods to transmit nuanced meaning. The most important change in our online style was the addition of two new-age hieroglyphical languages: Emojis and Smileys
emoji and smiley are emotional characters that represent the first language born in the digital world, designed to add an emotional touch to a otherwise flat text. The emojis are popular since their apparition on Japanese mobile phones to the late 1990s.
The development of emoji and smiley was preceded by textual emoticons, as well as by graphic representations, inside and outside Japan in the 1990s. There were emoticons that were used in most of the chat rooms connected at that time, for example:-) and:-( . These early performances would serve as a basis for the emoji we know today on our smartphones.
The first emoji were invented in 1999 by the Japanese artist Shigetaka Kurita who worked with the developers of DoCoMo's "i-mode" mobile Internet platform in Japan.
The latter wanted to design an attractive interface to transmit information in a simple way, for example, an icon to display weather forecasts rather than to write “cloud.”
Kurita drew a set 12 pixels by 12 pixels can be selected from a grid similar to a keyboard in the interface, then sent to the mobile phones as their own characters. The 176 emoticons of Kurita are privileged symbols on the faces, because the goal has been to find new ways to express information. There were icons to show the weather (sun, clouds, umbrella, snowman), traffic (car, tram, plane, boat), technology (fixed line, mobile phone, TV).
The emojis and smileys quickly became popular in Japan, while rival mobile companies copied the idea of DOCOMO (NTT DoCoMo). Since mobile computing continued to explode in the mid-2000s, companies outside Japan, such as Apple and Android, had the opportunity to integrate Emoji and smiley on the keyboard of their platforms.
In 2007, a team of software developers at Google decided to run the load, asking that the emoticons be recognized by the Unicode Consortium a private organization that coordinates the development of the Unicode standard to maintain text standards on several computers. Unicode finally decided to index the emoji. It was the beginning of the legitimation of emoji as a form of communication. In other words, Emoji and smiley had become too popular to be ignored.
The blessing of the Unicode Consortium was not only a way to maintain standards for the existing lexicon, but a standard that will guide the evolutions of emojis. Indeed, every year new emoji are offered and some are selected to be part of the emoji lexicon.
